Do Greater Things: Activating the Kingdom to Heal the Sick and Love the Lost

An Army Is Rising Up

When the seventy-two disciples returned, they joyfully

reported to him, “Lord, even the demons obey us when

    we use your name!”

“Yes,” he told them, “I saw Satan fall from heaven like

lightning! Look, I have given you authority over all the

power of the enemy, and you can walk among snakes

and scorpions and crush them. Nothing will injure you.”

    Luke 10:17–19 NLT

The messages come from all over the United States and from dozens of countries around the world. Emails, texts and letters from excited men, women and children who can’t wait to tell me what God is doing in their lives:

Robby, it’s true! I did what you said to do, and it works!

Pastor Dawkins, I prayed for a lady who was totally deaf in her left ear, and now she can hear!

The writers are excited about what God has done, and, in some cases, they are stunned that He would choose to do it through them. Many of them tell me that until they read my first book, Do What Jesus Did (Chosen, 2013), they thought that God performed miracles and healings only through the hands of very holy and special people. Certainly, they thought, He wouldn’t use ordinary, flawed people like them.

But, you know, that’s exactly what He does—take it from one who knows. Jesus meant exactly what He said when He told His followers, “Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father” (John 14:12, emphasis added).

It’s amazing to me that some people are surprised when God does the things He said He’d do. After all, He’s God. If He says something, you can bet your life that it’s the truth, and there’s nothing anyone can do to change it.

Surprised by His Power

Take another look at the passage of Scripture I used at the beginning of this chapter. Can’t you just hear the surprise in the disciples’ voices? “Lord, even the demons obey us when we use your name!” Before Jesus sent them out, He told them they would have authority over the powers of darkness, but based on what I read in this passage, I can see that they didn’t quite believe it. It’s as if they’re saying, “What You told us is actually true. It really works!”

Of course it does! If you belong to Jesus, you have the power to

    ? heal the sick

? cast out demons and bring deliverance to those trapped in spiritual darkness

    ? prophesy in His name

    ? call out creative miracles

? receive supernatural words of wisdom and knowledge

? and even raise the dead

Have you heard that inspiring song “Break Every Chain”?1 My friends at Jesus Culture recorded it. The lyrics talk about the power we have in the name of Jesus and how God is raising up an army that will break every chain. He is on the move all over the world. I know because I’ve ministered in fifty countries and I’ve seen it with my own eyes—again and again and again.

If you are in a relationship with Christ, you are in His army. If your heart is stirred to put Jesus on display (as my friend and fellow minister Brian Blount says), then you can be sure that He will put you on display. You can do great things for the sake of His Kingdom if you believe and are willing to step out and take the risk (which is another way I often spell faith).

My intent in writing this book is to show you how to activate your faith so you can do even greater things than Jesus and His disciples did—things that will change your community and our world.

A few weeks ago in Scotland, I had the privilege of visiting the gravesite of the great missionary Smith Wigglesworth. Wigglesworth, who preached the Gospel to millions of people throughout the world, was known for the miracles that accompanied his preaching. He healed thousands of sick men, women and children, cast out demons that had held people in bondage for decades, and is said to have raised more than a dozen people from the dead.

As I thought about the life of this great man, I began to consider some of the other great people God has used to change our world. People like John Wimber, Kathryn Kuhlman and Lonnie Frisbee. These are just some of those God has used to show us how to live beyond our expectations and move further and deeper into the realm of His Kingdom. These are the giants whose shoulders we stand on as God uses us to do even greater things for His glory.

The deaths of people like Smith Wigglesworth and Lonnie Frisbee did not bring an end to a great movement of God in these latter days. Their ministries, as great as they were, were only the beginning of a great move of the Holy Spirit that continues today through people like you and me.

I remember how amazed I was when I finished reading Smith Wigglesworth’s biography a few years ago. I felt so inadequate in comparison to this great evangelist, and I confessed to God, I am no Smith Wigglesworth.

In response, I heard His reassuring voice: I don’t need another Smith Wigglesworth. I need Robby Dawkins now.

Whoever you may be. Wherever you live. Whatever you may see as your own flaws. God doesn’t need another John Wimber or another Kathryn Kuhlman. He needs you!

    Who Is Robby Dawkins?

Before we get started on our journey, let me tell you just a little bit about who I am. First of all, I’m a regular person who faces the same daily struggles every human being faces. I have bills to pay and errands to run, children to take care of, and a lawn to mow. I don’t go around walking on water, nor do I have a glowing halo floating over my head. The only difference between you and me may be that I am called as a minister and an evangelist. You may or may not share my calling. Whether or not you do, I know that you and I are both called to tell people about the life-changing, transforming love of Jesus. Jesus expects us to heal the sick, cast out demons and even raise the dead in His name!

I’m really an ordinary guy. Yet I have been living a life of miracles from the day I was born. Actually, from before I was born. If you have read either of my previous books, Do What Jesus Did or Identity Thief (Chosen, 2015), you know that Satan appeared to my mother when she was pregnant with me and told her that he was going to kill me. I won’t go further into the details of that story here because, as I said, it has been told before. My point is that I have been aware of God’s supernatural, miracle-working power since the early days of my life, so I suppose it’s only natural that I would wind up in the Vineyard, a movement that its founder, John Wimber, always said would be totally committed to operating in signs and wonders.

Prior to founding the Vineyard, John and his wife, Carol, attended a church that taught the age of miracles was past. Their church believed that God supernaturally healed the sick and raised the dead through prayer and the laying on of hands way back in the first century, but not anymore. Carol (now a dear friend of ours) told us that one day their toddler son, Sean, encountered a swarm of bees that stung him dozens of times. Ugly red welts covered his body. Fearing for their son’s life, the Wimbers placed their hands on him and prayed for his healing. To their amazement, the red splotches on his skin disappeared immediately. They were deeply grateful, and also amazed, that God had answered their prayers.

This was the first of many experiences that convinced the Wimbers that miracles and healings are still available to those who believe. I believe something happened inside John and Carol Wimber on the day their son was attacked by that swarm of bees. Their faith was activated in a new way, and God’s power was released to heal their boy. As Christ-following believers, John and Carol had always had the right to call on God and receive healing and miracles from His hand—but they didn’t know it. Until that day, they had never cried out for a miracle because they didn’t believe miracles were possible. When they spoke in faith, they received.

The same thing can and will happen for you. When you begin to have faith in the power of God, take Him at His Word, understand His love for you and activate it, then you, too, will see His power released in healings, financial blessings and miracles of all kinds.

In Do What Jesus Did, I wrote, “This book is not meant to reproduce the Robby Dawkins way of doing things,” which is true of all three of my books. Yet as I witnessed many denominations and movements (even the one I’m in) begin to shift away from the very practices of power that launched them, I felt the need to write a book to declare that God is still on the move and that we can do what Jesus did. My aim with that book was to ignite vision and to encourage and empower people to step out into the things they were created for—“to pitch you the ball and watch each and every one of you knock it out of the park,” as I put it.

When I wrote Identity Thief, I built upon that by talking about how the enemy sneaks in and deceives us into thinking we aren’t qualified enough, good enough or capable enough for God to use. Satan uses our sins and shortcomings, tempting us with them to keep us out of the batter’s box, where the Lord is setting us up to walk in our true identity. That identity in Him is a life filled with love for others as we operate in signs and wonders, reinstating us back into that place of restored relationship with the Father.

My purpose now, in writing Do Greater Things, is to build on what I taught in those two books and to further equip you for service in God’s Kingdom by helping you move from the batter’s box to the pitcher’s mound. This means not only stepping out yourself, but also giving away what God has shown you, so that you will see not only your community, but the entire world transformed and engaging in doing what Jesus did. Making that shift activates you as part of the “Spirit Tribe” I will talk more about.

I truly believe this is all part of the greater things God is inviting us to in John 14:12. I want to show you how Jesus’ power and authority are given to us in practical ways, so that even unbelievers can experience this in action and see how God is inviting them into a relationship with Him. And as you and I demonstrate to others what Jesus is inviting them to in that relationship, it reveals to us that we have more weapons in our arsenal than we realize.

Are you ready to activate the power and presence of Jesus within you, moving wherever He is moving, working with whomever He is working with, doing whatever He is doing? Are you ready to do greater things? Turn the page and let the adventure continue.

? What is the primary benefit you hope to gain from reading this book?
